Talk about fun. Wizards of the Coasts gives us Dragon lovers something to look forward to in the next set!
So with Fate Reforged's release date slowly closing in, spoilers for the set are appearing bit by tiny bit. And when I checked it out early this morning, boy was I surprised!
Ugin, The Spirit Dragon
8
Planeswalker - Ugin
[+2]: Ugin, the Spirit Dragon deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
[-X]: Exile each permanent with converted mana cost X or less that's one or more colors.
[-10]: You gain 7 life, draw seven cards, then put up to seven permanent cards from your hand onto the battlefield.
So aside from -what I find to be- the awesome looking art, let's do a quick breakdown of Ugin's abilities! First of, for his +2 Loyalty we get a Ghostfire. I would have severely been disappointed if this didn't appear anywhere on him. Seriously... But other than the flavor of it being on said Planeswalker, it's a reusable spot removal as long as he remains on the field.
His second ability is what makes it fun. Standard, as I've always seen it, is a pretty slow format. Obvious when you compare it to Legacy or Modern. His high mana cost looks like he'll fit only in EDH/Commander or Standard. Why in Standard? Well his -X abilities lets you get rid of any X or less CMC colored permanents on the field. Talk about hating on colors huh? Pretty much belongs to a Control Shell don't you think? That or some fun Ramp deck... Hehehe~~ the deck building shenanigans in me has been lighted!!
*Ahem*... Anyway... What saddens me is the fact that he would have certainly been an auto-include in Tron if he was one mana less. But then again, it wouldn't have made sense to me. I'm not much into the whole lore -I honestly should start though- about everything in the Magicverse but I do know about the whole Ugin vs Bolas bit. Or at least the small fundamentals of it!
So since our good friend Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker cost a total of 8, it was pretty much assured -in my mind at least- that Ugin would follow. His 7 Loyalty does trump Bolas' and his Ultimate is pretty much the opposite of his counterpart.
I don't really have much more to say aside from the fact that the first impression I got when I saw this was: Foil must getto!!!. Either as a collection, go into a random colorless EDH/Commander I'm going to rebuild again, or simply to collect it since it'll probably be a pretty looking foil... Probably...
